In the fast-moving world of computer visualization, a year in the business can translate into a broad and significant amount of experience. For Jeff Trish, who founded his firm in St. Paul, Minnesota and in business since 2002, the experience he’s gained has been far greater than the sum of the individual projects. But even with the knowledge and skill he’s developed, he still runs into the universal challenge – a shortage of Time.

“The most challenging thing I face everyday is timelines…Time management is the key to turning out high quality work consistently. I pride myself on hitting my deadlines each and every time,” Jeff said.

The bulk of Jeff’s work is in architectural visualization, though he has done several 3D illustrations for Popular Mechanics magazine and participated in the creation of Best Buy’s website for the “Geek Squad”. The variety of projects helps keep Jeff’s creative juices flowing. The advancement and development of new tools helps Jeff keep up with the demands of his clients – who are always looking for greater realism with ever shorter lead times.

“Over the next five years I see CG becoming the norm. As far as the architectural field goes, a lot of people still prefer the hand drawn stuff. I am seeing more and more people moving towards 3D. A photorealistic look with a nice soft edge is slowly becoming as prevalent as the hand drawn stuff,” Jeff says. That’s certainly good news for computer visualization professionals.

What’s less good, however, is the trouble that comes with receiving files and models from his clients. “The ability to transfer data between different 3D applications has definitely fallen short. I have clients that want to work in other 3D programs and pass it on to me to finish. It never works out right… Just because a program can export a .3ds file doesn’t mean I can import it and use the model…” Which just adds to the challenge of educating architects and their clients as to the work involved in creating exceptional renderings.

But Jeff’s found a straightforward approach that seems to do the trick. “I think the 3d image its self is such a powerful tool. I give my clients the ability to see things for the very first time. They can pass this information on to their clients who can’t read construction documents. I can then make changes and show them the results in the same day. This is a tool with endless possibilities that’s changing the way we see and do things.”

Another tool that Jeff uses to full advantage is textures from Got3D. “Got3D’s texture maps and 2D trees bring my renderings to life. Everyone always comments about the landscaping. I think they have the most realistic trees out there. When people ask about a rendering and they think it’s a photograph, that’s cool!”
