April Customer Spotlight - Jim Baltz - Rendermations, LLC

The never-ending pursuit of maximum detail balanced by the need to turn jobs around as quickly as possible is one of the characteristics that define all top rendering and animation studios. For Jim Baltz and Rendermations in Mays Landing, New Jersey, it's not just a goal, it's a business model. And a very successful one at that.

For more than a decade, Rendermations has been delivering high quality renderings to the small to medium-sized architectural design firms in the Northeast. And in all of that time, even as tools have become more sophisticated and clients ever more demanding, Jim's focus has remained the same - making every effort to bring more realism to each of their renderings. Rendermations takes special pride in ensuring that every one of their renderings has accurate reflections, proper highlights and shadows, and true textures. He's more than happy to leave interpretive renderings to someone else.

While each year brings more refinements to modeling, lighting, and rendering packages, the biggest changes he's seen has been the availability of natural looking content. "With all of the well-crafted alpha channels with Got3D's textures, I can drop in content almost effortlessly," says Jim. And in this business, effortless equates to fast and realistic. Fast and fake or slow and super-realistic just won't do. "I have found in the past that it really doesn't matter how much time you spend creating your 3D structure if the scene details do not have the same style. You might have a pretty picture of a building but the inconsistent surrounding elements will be the first thing your client will notice every time.

Like most folks in this business, Jim has used content from a number of different sources. "In the past, I was using a 3D plug-in that would give me the ability to drop in various people and objects into the scene. This was a great tool, but it didn't take long before I realized its faults. The problem that I saw with this is that the people were emotionless and without motion, the trees were too uniform with no characteristic and landscaping elements were stagnant. I would spend countless hours creating an image of a building only to downplay the final rendering with unrealistic scene materials. I also started experimenting with textures from a European company, only to be even more disappointed," says Jim.

"Now, with the textures and models that I use from Got3D I can create an architectural rendering with natural scene elements that will give my images a consistent, realistic feel every time. The people are active and have a timeless, generic look, not standing in the same spot staring aimlessly. The trees are extremely detailed which helps to give my renderings a photo-like quality and the bushes & flowers will enhance any rendering by providing a modern day utopian look."
